Loadmasters

RELOADING, some advice

We are now on the third book of Game Shooting within my lifetime and if you are lucky enough to shoot 150, 200 or perhaps 300 bird days with a single gun, then I think you will probably be aware that some guns are getting more shooting than you consider good for them. Catching up with them requires observation and dexterity so if you are interested, here is some advice.

Assuming you are right handed ask yourself some questions - do you load from the left pocket, can you reload without looking at your gun, are you happy to load one cartridge only , do you keep watching your front in a flush. As a commercial shooting organiser I have been watching shooting for 35 years and often I have to look away as poor loading technique leads to dropped cartridges, unshot opportunities and frustration ( me ) simply because the gun hasnt the wit to get organised. Getting excited is great and is the essence of what we enjoy but this should be harnessed with good technique and dare I say it - THE CORRECT EQUIPMENT !!

I think there are only two ways of really speeding up single gun reloading, yes I know the cartridge belt users will sniff, but the Belt Gannochy and the LOADMASTER really make an immediate difference to the gun who really does want to get organised and speed up.

Loadmaster

With the minimum of effort, if you wear a Loadmaster on the left side ( for the orthodox ) and learn the ability to "nod" the gun open with one hand ( grip the hand of the stock in the right hand with the lower edge of the forearm in positive contact along the length of the comb, push the top lever open with the right hand thumb and nod the barrels down ) you are now ejecting at the same time as your left hand goes down to the Loadmaster and takes two shells.

All at the same time your eyes should be in the sky ( dont look down ) watching for the next shot and if a shot is on, estimating line and lead. Then the left hand swings over the now empty chambers and fills the gun. If you are the same vintage as me then you might have read Gough Thomas and you can use his system and refine the actual filling of the gun by holding both cartridges in the left hand and using one cartridge as a pivot - put it just in the chamber and then rotate the other cartridge about it, when this is above the other chamber, then drop them both in.

In practice all this takes probably a second and when done well what a joy to watch, many years ago I watched a famous ( perhaps infamous ) shot wipe out a covey of 6 grey partridges who came out of a turnip field in an extended flush. There was no rush, just easy opening Hollands and pure efficiency that came with practise and the expenditure on shooting of not one but three fortunes!

Loadmaster De Luxe

THE LOADMASTER After an absence of about 10 years we reintroduced the new LOADMASTER DE LUXE, this version is slightly smaller than Bill Sinclairs original and it has a new ABS plastic gate to prevent cartridges from slipping out accidentally. At the various Game Fairs we demonstrate these great loaders and sometimes I had a job convincing people that the knack of pulling the cartridges past the gate was perfectly simple and just required a few minutes practise. So I think I lost a few sales - this would never do , so I went back to the Masters original design and saw that whilst the plastic gate is probably more efficient ( it is always in place ) the original Loadmaster had a simple removable strap which did the same job.

So, as usual - I copied it! The new Loadmaster CLASSIC is in effect a very close copy of Bill Sinclairs original. The addition of a bottom retaining strap means that between drives the strap is closed with a strong ring stud so preventing any cartridge escaping and as soon as you arrive at the possible action then the strap is unpopped and two cartridges are freely available. There is no drag from the gate and no knack to learn - simply pull one or two cartridges out and reload; nothing could be faster.

Both types hold 28 x 12 or 16 bore cartridges and we also offer a simple spacer ( FOC ) which allows the Loadmaster to work well with 20 bore cartridges - this spacer is stuck to the inside of the outside wall of each chamber and tightens up the stack so that they easily drop down to the feed gate. The Loadmaster takes 34 x 20 bore cartridges.

The Loadmaster is designed to take all lengths of cartridges up to 3" which means that with normal shells there is a slight gap at the back of the chambers. If this bothers you we will provide you with another spacer FOC which you can stick to the back of each chamber.

Loadmaster

Both Loadmasters come in four leather colours - light brown, dark chocolate brown , moss green and oxblood. They are supplied with a traditional olive green strap, but we are happy to offer a Guardsman strap of your choice if prefer ed.
