Guardsman Straps
Over the past 6 years we have sold hundreds of cartridge bag and gun slip straps in many varied colours, indeed we had over 150 different webbings in stock at one time. At that time two Irish mills went out of business and they sold me their remaining old stocks of webbings; as I trawled through these musty boxes some rolls still had labels attached with very rusty pins and the beautiful copper plate writing revealed webbing made for the Sierra Leon Light Infantry, the Wessex Yeomanry and many others.
Some years later we still have about 60 different webbings in stock and whenever possible I buy more stock - mostly they are military but we do have about 10 which are not regimental. Some customers relish the idea of webbing from a long gone regiment, some have no intention of wearing someone else's colours and the nice part is that we have often created a bit of a stir by making a strap in the correct colours for a member of a long gone regiment ( most satisfying ). Sometimes it is possible to follow the amalgamations of regiments by the slight changes in the position and width of the combination of the composite colours, for instance we have about six variations of a navy blue ground with claret and yellow stripes.
So we can make a strap for a CARTRIDGE BAG, GUN SLIP or DOUBLE GUNSLIP
Each strap is a combination of webbing in the middle and leather at either end. As discussed you have a choice of about 60 webbings and also 3 different colours of leather to match the colour of the bag or slip; these are:- Dark Havana - bourneville chocolate colour Light Havana - honey colour Conker- reddish brown
Cartridge bag strap - we need to know how the existing strap is joined to the bag. Usually there are two brass buckles either side of the bag through which the strap passes - we need to know the INSIDE width of these buckles ( please don't use the old strap as the measurement as the width of the old strap is usually narrower than a new one - gravity over time has pulled it out of shape ). We make 4 different widths of leather ends for cartridge bags, so this width measurement ( mms or inches ) is important.

Just to make life interesting not all cartridge bags have two buckles , some have only one buckle and on the other side there is a D ring and on this side the strap is fixed with a double headed brass rivet. This is no problem - the D ring leather end is one size only but we do need to know the inside width of the buckle on the other side. Just occasionally a bag has D rings on either side , this is the easiest as no strap width measurements are necessary.
Cartridge Bag straps are all cut to about the same length - 50" to the middle holes. If you require something different please advise. I think very big bags are easier to carry with a short strap and small walking up bags ( slung across the shoulder ) better with slightly longer ones.
Width of webbing is also worthy of consideration - the range is from 3" to 2" wide. I prefer 3" and 2 3/4" for 150 ( and bigger ) size bags and double gun straps and 2 1/2" to 3" for 100 size bags and gun slips. The smaller bag of 50 size I regard as mainly a walking up bag and I prefer narrower webbings of say 2" as this doesn't interfere with the gun mount. I think a 75 bag can have a 2" to 2 3/4" webbing and still look in proportion. Usually the choice is a compromise as the webbings only usually come in one width and one particular colour is sure to catch your eye.

Gun Slip Straps
These are much more straight forward. Most gun slip straps are made from narrow leather with buckles and loops which are never used, they support about 9 Lbs of gun and slip and cut into the shoulder. Ours are made from nice wide webbing don't have buckles and don't cut into your shoulder!
Most slips attach to the strap by two D rings 30 to 34 inches apart - our webbing straps fit onto these perfectly . Our straps are a simple wide webbing with leather ends - the ends fasten with double headed brass rivets; on each leather end there are three holes of which you choose two - this gives you adjustment for the length.
Again you have a choice of leather end colour; Dark Havana , Light Havana or Conker.
If your slip has D rings which are not 30 to 34 inches apart ( American slips usually ) then please advise. Every thing is handmade to order so variations on the theme are straight forward and cost the same.

Double Gun Slip Strap
There have been several items of French " Hunting " kit that have given me ideas and this is one of them. It is simplicity itself - at each end of the webbing we attach a large D ring onto which are attached two strap and buckles ( four in total ) each of these buckles directly onto the slip's D rings - two at the top and two at the bottom.
The originals are made from leather but I choose to use our wide colourfull webbings which I think suits the whole concept of shooting double guns - the Loaders like them because they may have 18lbs weight on their shoulder, usually with skinny leather straps which are uncomfortable; the Double Gun Strap is a single strap holding the two guns together, it is 3" wide, very comfortable and doesn't slip off the shoulder.
The boss likes them because at a glance he can see where his Loader ( and his peg ) is, and to this end - the brighter the colour, the better .His valuable guns will not be banged together because they are held together, nor will he have the horror of watching one of his guns slip of his loaders shoulder as the loader bends down trying to disentangle himself from two leather straps and perhaps two cartridge bag straps.
A 150 cartridge bag and a double gun strap both with straps in the same bright colours will add considerable efficiency to the "big day". Of course you have to choose your webbing and the leather colour to match your slips.
The other practical advantage of this strap is that it converts to a single gun strap in 20 seconds - two buckles to undo and the other slip is separated from its partner.
