Field Tantallus |
We make two types of Tantallus - the Shipka which is leather covered and the Bowmont which is plain wood.
|
The box is the same in both models and the standard box is made from solid oak. We also use walnut and mahogany - these are slightly more expensive. The boxes are designed to hold two bottles of Champagne and a bottle of Sloe gin with 12 champagne cups in their own pigeon holes on the other side to the bottles. There is a drop down shelf which locks into position up and down and provides a safe platform to pour the drinks. There is a small drawer above the bottles to hold corkscrews and bottle openers. The box is lockable.
The boxes are of the finest quality, made by a Midlands company of Museum display cabinet makers; no faced board or chip board is used and the brass furniture is specially cast ( at considerable expense ) by the last brass furniture founders in the country. The box`s carrying handle is handmade and secured by brass plates and 6 screws, there are 3 secret hinges which give the maximum strength to this inevitably heavy box.

The Shipka is covered in handstitched Sedgewicks best bridle leather and there is choice of colour here; the usual mix is oak and dark havana leather, but mahogany and australian nut or walnut and light havana are very striking. It takes about 2 weeks for our hand stitcher to cover a box so supply is a problem and in practice these superb boxes are usually sold before I take delivery. So if you require one for a present please give me some time. I believe that there is only one man in the country who can work to this standard so the supply is limited.
The Bowmont comes complete with 12 of our 225 cc silver plated, gilded , fluted champagne cups which are numbered in the bottom 1 to 10 plus 2 plain. The Shipka comes complete with 12 silver plated 275cc beaded cups numbered as above.
There are choices in cups - we have two solid silver cups which will fit . These are the Planished Champagne ( 225cc ) and the Solid Britannia fluted ( 225 cc ) cups. For the relevant prices please see our silver cup section. We can also provide a case for the cups so that you can use the cups independantly of the Tantalus.

THE DIXON TANTALUS
This drinks box was designed by Nick, a very keen grouse shooting friend who insists on 11's being taken from a proper glass. The shooting theme is very evident from the photos and being made by the owners of that great Victorian company Dixons of Sheffield it has a great pedigree and authenticity.
The box is centred on 10 or 12 large cartridge shaped lead crystal glasses that have gilded silver heads, these give each glass a good base upon which to stand. The cups bear the Dixon sterling silver hall mark as do the decanters.
These cartridge glasses are boxed in solid walnut and are available with three silver mounted decanters, or with space for two bottles of Champagne and a bottle of spirits ( sloe gin ) or just or 12 cartridge glasses.
As there are several options for this set it is available to special order only, the lead time is 6 weeks.
